Chris Williams

Chris Williams started racing optimists when he was five years old and quickly fell in love with the independence and competition which sailing provides to young kids. As Chris grew into larger dinghies he enjoyed many successes and championships. Soon Chris started looking up to the top sailmakers he raced against because of the respect other sailors gave them and the contributions they made to helping others learn to race at high levels.

In 1993, Chris began a sailmaking apprenticeship at North Sails New Orleans and by 1995 he was building sails for America's Cup Winner Team New Zealand in San Diego, where Quantum's Dave Armitage was also a sailmaker. After learning the craft of making sails, he was invited by Silver Medalist Steve Benjamin to join Banks Sails as a designer eventually becoming Vice President at 24 years old. With Benjamin, Chris learned the craft of racing yachts professionally where he focused on speed, tuning and sail shape refinement. This partnership, over 20 years, won dozens championships and offshore races.

During the 2007 America's Cup, Chris Williams was the sail designer and a sailor at Team Shosholoza. It was in Valencia that Chris first worked with Quantum Sail designer Brett Jones, who was a headsail trimmer for the team. Many new computational analysis techniques were developed for the South African team sails and rig programs which Chris later used to refine in classes such as the Maxi 72's, TP52's and new offshore one design yachts.

Chris has been a trimmer or strategist in many victories on TP52 and Carkeek 40 programs in the last five years. He was a trimmer on the TP52 All4One, winning the Cagliari MedCup event. In the early years of the MedCup circuit, Chris was part of many teams as both a sail designer and trimmer.
