A Born Sailor - Interview with Opti Sailor Ethan Gerber

Like many young sailors, 11-year-old Ethan Gerber is growing up in a sailing home. A sixth grader in Traverse City, Michigan, he sails at the Grand Traverse Yacht Club and with Traverse Area Community Sailing, but he got his start several years ago with his family.

When did you start sailing? Why?
I started sailing when I was two-years-old. My grandpa has a boat (a Cal 40), and we went on it.

What's your favorite thing about sailing?
My favorite thing is the competitiveness of the sport, and being on the water.

What's the funniest thing that's happened while you were sailing (or a favorite moment)?
The most memorable thing that happened to me was when I swamped my boat three times in a day when I was training for the 2016 Orange Bowl Regatta.

What was the scariest thing that's happened while you were sailing?
The scariest thing was when the mast fell down when I was sailing on a catamaran.

If you could sail anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?
I would go to Puerto Rico, because it would be cool to sail where the water is really good and the wind is good.

Which sail do you use? Why did you pick that one?
I use a Quantum Opti sail. It was brand new. The sail fit my age, weight, and ability.

What are your sailing goals?
My goal is to win or get in the top three at a really big sailing event.

What advice do you have for other new sailors?
Begin small in small boats, and learn the basics. As you progress, sail more boats so you can figure out what you like.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
When I grow up I want to be an NFL player.

Is there anything else you'd like people to know?
I like to sail. I like football. Go Lions!
