Quantum Sails San Diego, an independently-owned affiliate of Quantum Sails since 1999, has been acquired by Quantum Sails. Loft founder Mark Reynolds, along with team members George Szabo, Christine Schisler and Kikham Sirivong, will continue operating the loft and serving customers in one design, big boat sails and service.
Mark Reynolds started the loft in 1982, quickly becoming known for his medal-winning sails for the Star and Snipe classes. Reynolds is an Olympic champion in the Star class, earning gold medals in 1992 and 2000 and silver in 1988. Also in the Star class, Reynolds won two world championships, seven Bacardi Cups and nine North American championships. Reynolds is also a Snipe class champion, having won a Pan Am Games gold medal. More recently he has broadened his scope, sailing on Farr 40s, Melges 24s, and a leg of the Volvo Ocean Race. Reynolds is just back from the Rio Games where he helped coach the US Sailing Team in the Laser class.
Reynolds says there were a few factors that weighed into his decision, retirement not being one of them. “I’m not retiring yet,” he confirmed. “I’m excited about our future direction. This change sets us up as a research and development facility for Quantum’s one design program where we can apply our knowledge and expertise to OD product development and new designs.”
The other advantage is broader distribution for the loft’s medal-winning sails. “With a global demand for our sails,” says Reynolds, “this transition opens up distribution through Quantum’s worldwide network. It will improve product accessibility for international sailors. There’s already a lot of enthusiasm for this in South America, so we know this is a good decision that will benefit a lot of sailors.”
Quantum President Ed Reynolds welcomes the San Diego loft to the group saying, “Mark and George have a record of excellence in sail development. Given the expertise, facilities and excellent year-round sailing available in southern California—along with dedicated resources from Quantum Sails—we expect this location to become one of the premiere facilities in the world for the design, engineering, prototyping and testing of one design sails.”
Quantum Sails designs and manufacturers high-quality, top-performing sails for one design, racing and cruising boats, including the company’s proprietary Fusion M™ membrane sails. Sails are sold and serviced at more than 60 locations around the globe. The company’s world headquarters is located in Traverse City, Michigan.
