J/80 CLASS INFO

Quantum has been involved with the J/80 class since day one. We’ve put endless hours of testing and refining into our sails and rig tune to help you get the most out of your J/80. Our J-Boat division of designers and sailors continually works on all aspects of our program injecting new ideas so the progress never ends. Quantum’s top J/80 race results include multiple world, North American, European and midwinter championships.

Our latest Fusion M™ aramid class jib and Dacron class main are fast, and our comprehensive tuning guide makes it easy to set up and tune for different conditions. One of the key components of our upwind sails is how well they work together. The main and jibs are well-matched and easy to tune to different wind conditions. The Quantum class asymmetrical’s forgiving and fast shape allows the boat to sail deep angles while maintaining speed.

Give your Quantum J/80 class contact a call to get more information on our fast and updated designs, and find out how we can help get your program on the podium.

J/80 Mainsails

J/80 Class Mainsail

Quantum's mainsail has evolved over the years to be the most user-friendly mainsail in the class. The use of durable, yarn-tempered Dacron makes it easier to adjust the sail shape with backstay and sheet tension.

Mainsails include rope luff, spreader windows, sail numbers, RBS tapered battens, draft stripes, loosefoot, roll bag and ISAF measurement sticker

J/80 Headsails

J/80 FUSION M Class Jib

Made with our Fusion M™ lamination process, the post-cured shaping ensures exact shape duplication, a must for one design sails. Our leech profile takes advantage of the class rules and has more area at the top batten. The new matte finish film offers greater UV resistance for longer sail life, less shrinkage during lamination, reduced glare for less eyestrain and better visibility, and less visible micro-marring, which keeps your sails looking newer longer. We have also added a light Dacron taffeta to one side of the foot. This helps keep the foot area from breaking down and helps with any skirting mishaps that may happen from time to time. Includes tube bag and ISAF measurement sticker.

Terry Flynn, a third generation sailmaker, started out in Annapolis, Maryland, where he developed a great foundation for both cruising and racing. He grew up on the family sailboat, cruising all over the Chesapeake Bay. Before he was 15 years old, he made 10 offshore deliveries from New York to Florida.

As a racer, Terry has competed in the Newport-Bermuda, the old SORC, Annapolis-Newport, and Trans-Superior races. His One Design credits include four J/22 North Americans and a World Championship. He’s also won North Americans, Nationals, and Midwinter races on 420s, Lightnings, J/24s, J/80s, J/30s, and Cadets, as well as winning One Ton, ¾ Ton, and ½ Ton Championships.

Growing up around sailors, Terry naturally fell into sailmaking and has never looked back. He’s worked his way up through the ranks, doing everything from bench work to design during his 37 year career. Terry has been with Quantum since the beginning, using his experiences to make sails that help customers improve their racing result or simply get more enjoyment out of their boats.

When Kerry Klingler was eight years old, his father decided sailing would be a good sport for the family to enjoy together. Kerry and his dad learned to sail at the same time, and Kerry fell in love. He started to race competitively at the local yacht club, and by the time he was a senior in high school he knew he wanted to make the sailing industry his career. He dreamed of life as a sailmaker and decided to pursue that dream.

Kerry jumped into the industry and found himself not only making sails, but running a loft as well. While he appreciated the opportunity to stay in the industry, he felt his talents growing stale. “I was designing sails, but no one was pushing me to the next level as a maker or designer,” he said. “I started looking for a position where I could design with a company that was technologically advanced so I could become a better, smarter, more advanced sail designer.”

He found that opportunity at Quantum Sails. As the J-Boat Team Leader, Kerry not only designs sails for some of the largest One Design fleets, he also gets out of the loft to help his clients get the most out of every sail. Though people recognize him as a dedicated sailmaker, he’s also working hard all the time to provide the best service and products for their boats.

“I teach them first,” he said. “I show them how to tune the boat, how the sail should sit on the boat, how to trim it, and more. It’s a pretty comprehensive session where I try to infuse as much knowledge as possible.”

Maxim Logutenko

When Carles Rodriguez was four years old, his mother worked for a One Design boat company. She started taking him to races on the weekends, and it didn’t take long before Carlos started racing. When he was just 17 years old, the Catalonian Sailing Federation offered him a job, and he’s been sailing ever since.

A professional sailor since 1995, Carlos has an extensive resume, including experience on JV37 Comet, Open 60 Estrella Damm, TP52, X-35, J/80, IMX40, and Sinergia 40. His maxi racing boat experiences include Farr 92 El Baile, Frers 100 Syl, SW72 Kiboko, SW100 Alarife, A&R 100 Arrayan, Vitters 98 Aphrodite, GF105 Only Now, Noorsee 88 Ifalik, Wally 77 Barong, and many other classes.

Carlos started working at a Quantum Sails loft in1996. A well-known brand in Spain, Quantum Sails Spain goes beyond simply selling sails. Carlos not only spends almost every weekend racing in local and national events with Quantum customers, serving as skipper, tactician, and jib-spinnaker-mainsail trimmer, he also trims masts, finds crew members, provides certification optimization, and even services sails during races. At Quantum Sails Spain, Carlos works hard to make it a full-service, one-stop loft for all sailing needs.
