Quantum and the All New Melges 40

The sailing industry is buzzing with news of the new Melges 40 class; our team included! Here is the lowdown on the new class and what Quantum is doing in working with the Melges team to translate our championship winning Melges sail designs to the new Melges 40 sails.

The Melges 40 is a new concept in one design racing, as the boat will have a canting keel and a large sail plan for maximum upwind performance and amazing speeds off the wind. This innovative boat, designed by world renowned naval architects Botin Partners and built by Premier Composite Technologies (PCT), will feature twin rudders for full, high-speed control.

Melges 40 events will follow strict one design rules. The four-day regattas will include inshore racing, coastal racing, and windward/leeward style races.

The Melges 40 is a dream come true for Melges Europe President Federico Michetti. “The sailing industry needs a new and exciting forty footer, and the Melges 40 will deliver a one-of-a-kind experience for owners and teams,” he said. “Quantum has been very supportive of the Melges 20, Melges 24, and Melges 32 classes over the years, and we are very happy to have them working with us on the new Melges 40 one design project.”

Quantum has delegated our full resources to the new Melges 40 class sail development. One Design Offshore Director Scott Nixon is working with the Melges team to help make this new class a success.

“The Melges 40 represents the future of fast, one design sport-boat racing,” said Nixon. “The boat will be amazing to race, and with the Melges name behind the boat, you can guarantee fast, fun, competitive racing at spectacular venues around the world. We are so happy that Federico and the Melges 40 team have been so open to communications and ideas from our group. This willingness to work as a group will really benefit the clients and teams when they see the final product on the water.”

Quantum is working hard behind-the-scenes to make sure our class sails are ready to go out-of-the-box. Sail designer Jordi Calafat is leading the Quantum design team. He has been working with the Botin office and Southern Spars to get the latest information on rig analysis, which will go through Quantum’s iQ technology process to create the fastest, most efficient sails.

Quantum Sails is treating the Melges 40 project like we would our own TP52 project – we won’t leave any stone unturned as we develop and test the best flying shapes and sail designs. Nixon said, “Quantum already has some great clients involved in the Melges 40, and we will do everything in our power to help make this class a success so our clients can continue to sail at a high level in this exciting new one design concept.”

The first class events will take place in Europe in 2017. We’ll see you there!
