Annie Haeger of Boston College Wins Quantum Woman Collegiate Sailor of the Year Award

Quantum Sail Design Group is proud to sponsor the Quantum Woman Collegiate Sailor of the Year Award presented by the Intercollegiate Sailing Association. This year’s winner is Annie Haeger, a junior and A-division skipper from Boston College. Haeger is from Lake Forest, Illinois but grew up sailing on Lake Beulah in Wisconsin.

In addition to this prestigious award, presented at the final Sperry Top-Sider Women’s National Championship banquet on May 26th, Annie was also named an ICSA All-American Women’s Skipper, an award she has won twice previously in 2009 and 2010. “What set Annie apart this year was that she has already placed at a National Championship this year, winning second at the ICSA Women’s Singlehanded Championship in the fall,” says John Vandemoer, head coach for Stanford University and member of the All-America selection committee. Haeger has had great success all year placing in the top three in nearly every women’s event she sailed in.

In Haeger’s acceptance speech she thanked her father for always cheering her on. “I am shocked,” Haeger said blushing, “there are a lot of amazing sailors.” She went on to acknowledge her teammates including her crew Emily Massa a junior from Barrington, R.I., without whom, Haeger says, she could not have accomplished her success. Haeger leads by example when she coaches youth sailors in the summer, “I try to get girls excited about sailing.” With her success thus far she is certainly giving girls a reason to look up to her. Haeger is looking forward to expanding her competition and seeing what else is possible saying, “Next year I will sail more coed events.”

Since 2003, the Quantum Women’s Collegiate Sailor of the Year award has annually honored an individual who has performed at the highest level of competition in district and national championships. Quantum believes that women sailors should receive the same recognition that male sailors receive in the sport to acknowledge women’s’ excellence in sailing and continue to foster its growth.

Megan Magill ’11 of St. Mary’s College of Maryland, was also named a finalist for the Quantum Women’s Collegiate Sailor of the Year Award and an ICSA All-American Woman Skipper. Magill placed in the top three in nearly every women’s event she sailed in this year. Congratulations to both Annie and Megan on their sailing accomplishments and an outstanding season.
