Quantum Sails Deliver at Farr 40 West Coast Championship

Though the final day of racing was cut short, Quantum sails powered through the elements at the Farr 40 West Coast Championship, finishing, third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the 15-boat fleet. With Quantum® customers winning eight of 10 races and two of the four days’ events, Quantum VP Terry Hutchinson said the company’s dominating presence at the event speaks volumes to the quality and capabilities of Quantum’s sails.

“The Farr 40 class is obviously one of the most competitive, if not the most competitive, off-shore one design in the world,” said Hutchinson. “For the sails to have had such dominating performances is awesome, but we need to keep working.”

Hutchinson said Quantum’s goal is to deliver sails that are good through the wind ranges. The conditions at Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club tested that. “What we saw was a variety of conditions. The fact that the sails were so successful supports our philosophy of being all-purpose and fast.”

Overall, he said consistency was probably the biggest factor contributing to the results. “The average finish for the winning team was fourth,” said Hutchinson. “Onboard Plenty we struggled with a 20 percent penalty on an OCS and finished a mere six points off the lead. Martin Hill on Estate Master crushed it on the second day, going 3,1,1. Flash Gordon won day three with their new Quantum upwind inventory, yet none of us were consistent for the entire 10 races.”

Though they may not have finished as high as they wanted, Quantum customers were happy with their results and sails. Still, Hutchinson said there’s always room for improvement. “The feedback we receive from the end user is instrumental in the development of our Farr 40 sails. This fleet is too competitive for us to rest, and if that is as simple as continually evaluating and identifying our strengths and weaknesses, that that is a step forward.”

The Quantum-powered teams on Estate Master, Plenty, Struntje Light, and Flash Gordon 6 placed 3, 4, 5 and 6 respectively at the event, with each team winning at least one race during the weekend.

In the Corinthian division, Rick Goebel on the Quantum-powered Insanity took first, finishing eighth overall. This is the second win for Insanity, who took first in the Corinthian division at the midwinters earlier this year.

Congratulations to everyone on a great weekend!
