Star Mainsail 46

The 46 main was intended to replace the Z-4. It's made off our plotter rather than the Mylar patterns like the Z-4 originally was. The main was used by 6 of the top 11 at the Perth Worlds when it was first introduced. It’s the best all-purpose main, faster than the Z-4 in the upper range but in lighter winds and chop there are still some that prefer the Z-4. The 46(H) can also be built with heavier cloth for added durability and performance for medium to heavy air sailing.

Star Mainsail 50

The 50 main is a bit fuller than the 46 up high and a bit less luff curve to fully match the Z-4 main. This is the optimum main for lighter winds and chop but still has great range and can be effective in strong wind as well. Our feeling is that this is a perfect replacement for the Z-4.

Star Mainsail Z-4

The Z-4 was our all-purpose main for over a decade. A powerful light air main with radial corners combined with rocked horizontal panels resulting in a controllable heavy air main as well.  Extremely easy to trim in all conditions giving you the consistent boat speed you need to allow you to concentrate on tactics.  This main has probably won more regattas than any other mainsail design ever! Replace by most by the 46 there are still some that prefer this main for their conditions so we’ve moved this design to the plotter and still offer this main.

Star Jib AP-6

The AP-6 is almost identical to the P-2 but has a slightly flatter entry up top for stronger winds and/or flat water.

Star Jib P-12

The P-12 is a slightly fuller version of the P-2c. We recommend this jib for venues with more chop particularly when the wind is lighter. Diego Negri has been using this jib as his all-purpose jib with great results and just showed tremendous speed in the South Americans and Worlds in Argentina winning a total of 6 races between the 2 regattas.

Star Jib P-2

Like the Z-4 main there are still those that like the classic P-2 jib so we continue to offer it and a few years ago moved it over to the plotter.

Star Jib P-2C

The P-2c is very similar to the popular P-2 but designed using a computer program and cut with our X/Y plotter. George used the P-2c to win the 2009 Worlds. The differences between the P-2 and P-2c are very small but the P-2c is a little straighter in the lower leech area providing better interaction with the mainsail.  The P-2c also has a radial head and this along with a bit more "balanced" design which makes it very smooth and it should provide a bit more longevity.

Mark Reynolds

When Mark Reynolds walked into the Opening Ceremonies at Sydney’s Olympic Games, he made U.S. Olympic yachting history as a four-time consecutive Olympic representative in the same event. Well-known as the “Star of the Star class," Mark has won two world championship titles ('00,'95) and three Olympic medals (1992 Gold,1988 Silver, 2000 Gold) in arguably the most competitive One Design class in the world.

Mark started sailing with his father (also a Star World Champion, sailing with Dennis Conner in 1971) when he was four. As a sophomore on the San Diego State University sailing team, he was an All American, leading the collegiate team to 2nd place finishes in 1974 and 1975 in the North American Dinghy Championships. A protégé of Dennis Conner, Mark started his first Olympic campaign in the Flying Dutchman class.

After the 1980 Olympic boycott, Mark started sailmaking at North Sails. Two years later, he left to start his own Sobstad loft, then joined Quantum Sails before the 2000 Olympics.

George Szabo

George grew up in San Diego racing Stars, Lasers and Snipes. As a kid, he made sails for his model boats before eventually taking a part-time job with Quantum during high school and college. He came on full-time in 1993 as a sailmaker and designer.

Using the latest computer design programs, George is able to create the fastest, most efficient sails for smaller One Design boats. This technology, combined with his intimate understanding of One Design sailing, allows him to create the most versatile sails available. The San Diego loft designs a variety of One Design sails, including Thistle and Lido 14, but their specialties are Olympic Class Star and Snipe boats.

George is the 2009 Star World Champion, as well as an 21-time National/North American Champion. In addition to his sail-making abilities and wins, he is also an accomplished keelboat tactician and trimmer.
