Shields

Quantum's goal for Shield sails is pretty simple: championship level sails at fair prices. We have succeeded on both counts. Despite only a fraction of the national market, Quantum's sails tend to gravitate towards the top of the leaderboard.

Shields Mainsails

Shields Cross-cut Class Mainsail

Our class mainsail has been in refinement since 1973. Our Dacron selection is the result of diligent testing to NOT be the lightest or most durable, but to be the sail that holds it shape the best over a typical three-year sail rotation. We have found that most “more durable” Dacron mainsails often have substantial shape changes after only one or two seasons! This mainsail comes standard with a vision and spreader window, draft stripes, tapered RBS battens, class insignia, clew slide, and a roll bag.

Shields Headsails

Shields Cross-cut Class Jib

Similar to our mainsail, our jib's Dacron selection is the result of diligent testing to NOT be the lightest or most durable, but to be the sail that holds it shape the best over a typical three-year sail rotation. We have heard it suggested that some jibs be retired after only one to two seasons, but a Quantum jib will outlast them all! The jib comes standard with vision and telltale windows, draft stripes, tapered RBS battens, and a roll bag.

George Szabo

George grew up in San Diego racing Stars, Lasers and Snipes. As a kid, he made sails for his model boats before eventually taking a part-time job with Quantum during high school and college. He came on full-time in 1993 as a sailmaker and designer.

Using the latest computer design programs, George is able to create the fastest, most efficient sails for smaller One Design boats. This technology, combined with his intimate understanding of One Design sailing, allows him to create the most versatile sails available. The San Diego loft designs a variety of One Design sails, including Thistle and Lido 14, but their specialties are Olympic Class Star and Snipe boats.

George is the 2009 Star World Champion, as well as an 21-time National/North American Champion. In addition to his sail-making abilities and wins, he is also an accomplished keelboat tactician and trimmer.
