Moth

Take flight with Quantum Sails and our all-new designs for 2024. The Q-AXv2 and Q-HXv2 Moth sails build on the successful Q-AXv1/HXv1 series. These sails, designed by Moth Class leader Mike Lennon with input from top foilers, were inspired by the race-proven performance of the outgoing Quantum Moth sails. The new designs have been updated and revised to increase sail toughness and longevity as well as performance. Both sizes have a fairer shape distribution to give smoother skin and easier usability. The high-performing Moth Class is sensitive to "wetted area" below the waves and above, so minimizing area is essential.

Moth QAXv2

The Q-AXv2 is constructed of premium Fusion membrane, integrating the luff and sail body into one section. The refined 2024 design builds on the elements proven in previous iterations: draft positioning for consistent entry and exit, fairing up the vertical shape distribution, and increased toughness of the skins. Quantum Fusion Moth sails are 100-percent Aramid fiber with 0505 light skins and a relatively high DPI in the loaded areas of the sail. This design delivers the right stretch in the right places for optimized performance. Combined with increased durability, this helps reduce the weakness of the DS lower-rig concept, negating some of the power losses seen in standard rigs of the past.

The performance profile of the Q-AX2 8.25 design offers an earlier take-off and a deeper downwind mode. Upgraded for 2024, the mid and upper C-tech tapered carbon battens are more draft aft and the mid-2 battens a little softer. The batten pockets are inside the sail skins, and the deck sweeper sections are also part of the membrane structure. When paired with the right mast, the Q-Axv2 8.25 creates an easier sail across a wide 5- to 25-knot range. Improved deck sweep, sail shape, and construction make this all-around sail a great choice.

The Q-AXv2 features a universal tack arrangement to fit any mast post or mast setup. The batten arrangement and placement make tension setup a breeze, and the 10mm Rocket adjusters on the DS diagonal battens create desired sail shape and improve the DS section performance.

The Q-AXv2 is available with deck sweeper length range from 850mm to 1250mm, depending on your specific sail setup. The 900 option fits the pre-DS typical mainsheet on the hull and boom without need for modification. Newer boats generally settle on the 1050 and 1200 options. Lighter sailors prefer the longer DS lengths, often requiring boat and boom modification on older boats. Contact your Quantum Sails Moth expert to discuss any specific DS requirements.

INCLUDES: C-tech tapered carbon battens, NEW Quantum injection-molded cams (long/lock version), reinforced window panels, sail numbers, leech end batten vernier “Rocket” adjustment with key, and rolled sail bag.

Moth QHXv2

To eliminate the need for multiple masts and shrouds or heavy air foiling, the Q-HX2 is available with a 7.5 square meter size based on the same luff length and specifications of the Q-AX2.

The refined 2024 design builds on the elements proven in previous iterations: draft positioning for consistent entry and exit, fairing up the vertical shape distribution, and increased toughness of the skins. The Q-HXv2 carries all the same features and performance of the Q-AXv2 and is optimized for wind ranges above 15 or 16 knots. Because you can set a deeper shape for a given heeling force versus with bigger sails, the Q-HX2 provides a better pointing angle, and, with less “wetted” area, you have less drag so you go higher and faster!

Michael Lennon

Before becoming a sailmaker in 1986, Michael Lennon trained as a mechanical engineer, but engineering was a short distraction. Ever since he started sailing in 1976, Mike wanted to be a sailmaker. Learning to sail on an Albacore and then helming his Mirror dinghy, Mike progressed to the popular Scorpion Class, taking his first title in 1986. He moved through multiple dinghy and keelboat classes with two Olympic campaigns in the Flying Dutchman and later the Tornado.

Mike's sailmaking career began at Hyde Sails, first as a development sailmaker before moving into design and management. He led the charge in securing OEM business, landing the new Laser and RS business along with smaller contracts. In 2001, Mike established offshore production in the Philippines and later became CEO of the company. Soon after the company was sold, Mike founded Lennon Sails and Lennon Racewear (wetsuits).

"Leaving behind Lennon Sails was not an easy decision, but having worked on projects with Quantum Sails, I can see what a great company it is. All that fantastic technology at my fingertips was too much to resist!"
