John Jenkins Joins Quantum Sails

For more than 40 years, John Jenkins has been a constant in the Chesapeake Bay sailing community on the water, in the loft, and behind thousands of sails that have powered everything from dinghies to offshore racers. Now, that legacy enters a new chapter as John joins Quantum Sails.

Raised in Baltimore, John learned to sail Penguins and Stars at Gibson Island, experiences that set the foundation for both a lifelong passion and a career defined by precision and performance. That career took him to the United States Naval Academy, where he spent four decades running the Academy's sail loft and shaping generations of sailors and boats alike.

At the Academy, John wasn't just building sails; he was rethinking how they were designed. Because of strict limitations on software, he couldn't rely on outside tools. So he built his own.

"I had to take what I was doing on the loft floor and teach a machine how to do it," John said. "Over time, I probably wrote 20 different sail design programs. I was pretty good at math, so I just taught myself how to program. It forced me to understand sailmaking from every angle."

That blend of craftsmanship and technical understanding became a hallmark of his work. Over the course of his career at the Academy, John designed or supervised the production of more than 7,000 sails, ranging from dinghies to 95-foot yachts, all while staying actively involved as a sailor himself.

His racing resume includes wins at the Star Class East Coast Olympic Trials and the Star Commodore's Cup, along with a Cal 25 National Championship. But just as important is the role he's played closer to home, particularly with the Log Canoe Fleet and the Chesapeake Bay Star fleet, where his sails — and his presence — have built a loyal following.

In 2010, John founded Jenkins Sails, deepening those relationships and continuing to serve the community he helped shape. Even as he looks ahead, that commitment remains unchanged.

"I reassure my customers that Jenkins Sails isn't gone," he said. "I'm still working with and alongside them, now with Quantum. The service is the same. Nothing changes for my customers or my community."

The path to Quantum came from a long-standing connection. John had been working with Durtek, giving Quantum President Andrew Scott visibility into his business and its reputation. When the two began talking about the future, the fit became clear.

"I'd been thinking about what was next," John said. "Andrew knew my business and asked me about it. It felt like the right move. I was flattered that my life's work had that kind of value."

For Andrew, bringing John into Quantum is about more than adding experience; it's about strengthening the company's connection to sailors and communities like Annapolis.

"John represents the very best sailmaking: decades of hands-on experience, an intuitive understanding of performance, and a genuine connection to the sailors he serves," says Andrew. "His impact on the Chesapeake Bay sailing community, especially on the Eastern Shore, speaks for itself. Bringing John into Quantum isn't just about adding expertise; it's about strengthening our commitment to craftsmanship, service, and the local sailing communities that define our sport."

There's also a deeper history behind the partnership. Early in his career, John worked for Andrew's father, sailmaker Jimmy Scott.  "Andrew was about nine years old, running around the sail loft," John said. "So in a way, this all comes full circle."

Today, John remains as active as ever, racing with the Log Canoe Fleet during the summer, sailing his Star out of St. Michaels, and staying closely connected to the sailors he's served for decades. The difference now is the support behind him.

"There's a lot more infrastructure than I had when I was doing everything on my own," he said. "The admin support, the ability to connect with people across the Quantum network — I get to talk to a lot of interesting people and gain new insight. It's been a welcome change."

For the sailors who have long relied on John Jenkins, that combination, familiar expertise with expanded resources, marks an evolution, not a departure. And for Quantum, it's a partnership rooted as much in shared values as it is in performance.
