Key Takeaways from Quantum’s Earth Day Webinar

Ahead of Earth Day, Quantum Sails hosted a team webinar focused on one of sailing's biggest sustainability challenges: what happens to sails at the end of their life. With more than 97 percent of sails still ending up in landfills, the conversation centered on practical, scalable ways to extend material lifecycles today while the industry works toward long-term recycling solutions.

Guest speaker Holly Manville, founder of Clean Sailors, shared how a simple question, "What to do with old sails?" sparked a global initiative connecting sailors, sailmakers, and innovators. "I didn't have the answer, but by connecting the dots between sailors and solutions, we can start doing something quite differently," she explained.

A major focus was the growth of the Resail platform, which now includes nearly 50 global drop-off points where sails can be repurposed into everything from bags and shelters to materials for humanitarian aid. "When you look at sails as a really strong, hardy fabric, the possibilities become much greater," Holly noted.

The discussion also highlighted a mindset shift: moving away from blame and toward collaboration and creativity. "It's not about demonizing an industry we love," said Holy. "It's about asking: what can we do better, and who can we do it with?"

Ultimately, the webinar reinforced a simple but powerful idea: small, collective actions matter. As Quantum's Sustainability Director, Lara Johns, put it, "If everyone just does a small thing, it adds up to a really big impact."

What You Can Do Next

  • Start the conversation: Share this webinar with a client, teammate, or sailing partner.
  • Give your sails a second life: Use or promote the Resail platform to repurpose old sails instead of sending them to landfill.
  • Become part of the solution: Consider turning your loft into a drop-off point or connecting with a local repurposing partner.
  • Think beyond sailing: Explore creative or community uses for sailcloth, from local projects to humanitarian applications.
  • Keep learning: Follow Clean Sailors and continue engaging with conversations around sustainability in the sport.

As Holly says, "You never know what's going to inspire someone else to do things differently."

Quantum's Approach to Sustainability

Quantum's commitment to sustainability goes beyond conversation; it's embedded in how the company designs, produces, and operates:

  • Sustainable product innovation: The EcoSeries sail line incorporates recycled fibers and materials—turning waste like plastic bottles into high-performance sails without sacrificing durability.
  • Responsible manufacturing: Quantum's production facility is ISO 14001 certified, reflecting long-standing environmental management practices and ongoing efforts to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
  • Waste reduction & repurposing: The company actively partners with organizations to repurpose old sails and divert materials from landfills.
  • Operational improvements: Across its global loft network, Quantum continues to invest in energy efficiency, recycling programs, and reduced resource consumption.
  • Culture & leadership: With a dedicated Director of Sustainability and company-wide initiatives, sustainability is integrated into daily decision-making and long-term strategy.

At its core, Quantum's philosophy is simple: sustainability isn't a single solution; it's a continuous process of improving how sails are made, used, and ultimately reimagined.
