Elevating Every Race: Inside the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series

While each location may be geographically unique, there's a rhythm to each stop of the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series. From St. Pete to Detroit and everywhere in between, the day starts early; rigging in the morning light, dock conversations with coaches and class mates over coffee, and watching the weather briefing before heading out. By the time the first warning signal sounds, the tone is set: competitive, but open; high-level, but accessible. That balance is what defines the series.

Hosted in standout sailing venues across the country, each stop brings its own conditions and challenges, drawing a mix of funded programs and Corinthian teams looking to test themselves. The result is a racecourse that's both competitive and collaborative, where learning happens just as quickly as results. Quantum Sails is proud to partner with Helly Hansen, Sailing World, and others to bring this experience to life, from the Chesapeake Bay to Marblehead Neck.

"The series connects many of the most active racing scenes in the country: St. Pete, Annapolis, Marblehead, Chicago, and Detroit," says Dave Reed, Editor of Sailing World. "They each thrive on their own, but the series comes in and really elevates the scene once a year with a major regatta."

What makes the series especially compelling is how much opportunity exists within a single weekend. Teams can arrive looking for tuning and leave having meaningfully changed their performance trajectory.

"It's an elevated experience compared to smaller, more local events," Reed adds. "Great racing on the water, next-level parties on shore, and a format that makes it easy for teams to show up knowing what to expect."

That opportunity is amplified by the level of support available on site, something that has become central to how teams experience the event.

"The bottom line: classes thrive when competitors trust the equipment and trust the organization," says Scott Nixon, Quantum's One Design Director. "Quantum is a key part of building that trust, race by race, regatta by regatta."

He adds that the impact extends beyond the front of the fleet. "Top competitors will always find the fast setup. What great partners do is close the gap for everyone else. Quantum's expertise, whether through tuning guides, onsite support at regattas, or coaching clinics, brings mid-fleet sailors closer to the front. A more competitive fleet makes every race better for every sailor."

That same on-site presence also creates access to a level of insight typically reserved for top-tier programs. "Quantum does a really good job of putting well-qualified, approachable people in the coach boats," says Quantum Sails Detroit's Dave Shriner. "You can ask anything from basic questions to getting on-the-water photos of your setup compared to others. That kind of feedback gives everyday sailors access to a level of data and insight that usually only exists at the grand prix level."

And beyond the immediate racing impact, the series becomes a feedback loop for design and development. "What people don't always realize is that these events feed directly into our design process," Shriner adds. "We're constantly collecting information and evaluating where we stand and where we can improve. It's not a one-way street, we're learning from sailors, from what we see on the water, and from how the sails are performing in real conditions."

That connection—between sailors, coaches, designers, and the racecourse—elevates the entire experience. It's not just about results on a given weekend, but about raising the level of the fleet over time.

And that's what makes the series more than a set of regattas. It's an open invitation: show up, get involved, and leave better than you arrived.
