Custom Craftsmanship Afloat: Madison Trotman on Leading Quantum Sails Annapolis Canvas Division

At the head of Quantum Sails Annapolis' Canvas Division, Madison Trotman is redefining what it means to deliver both form and function to boat owners. Specializing in fully custom marine canvas solutions, Trotman and her team see a wide range of projects, particularly from cruisers and liveaboards preparing for extended time on the water, often in sunny destinations like the Bahamas.

Annapolis Canvas Division Manager, Madison Trotman, cuts canvas for a custom project.

Why is canvas so important? Beyond protecting you and your crew from the sun and heat, UV rays steadily break down the fibers and stitching in your sails over time. Without proper protection, even brief exposure can cause weakening or discoloration. To combat this, UV covers and properly fitted sail covers act as a shield, absorbing these rays and preserving the integrity of your sails. In the same vein, covering your lifelines, toerails, and other features regularly exposed to the elements can extend time between repairs or replacements

"Our bread and butter is dodgers, biminis, and connector setups," says Trotman. "But we're also doing a lot of enclosure systems for liveaboards, toe rail covers to protect teak, and sunshades that add usable living space in the cockpit." Whether it's sail storage racks for a race team trailer, or interior and exterior upholstery for a powerboat, the Canvas Division can tackle it.

Everything is custom, from flybridge enclosures to racing boat lifeline covers. "We have our formulas for different pieces, like dodgers, and then work closely with the client on how we'll fabricate it to match their needs and preferences," she explains. "It's about balancing production with personalization."

New materials like Stamoid Open, a double-sided vinyl-coated fabric, are gaining popularity in the shop. "It's 100% waterproof, easy to clean, and built to withstand abrasion and tearing," says Trotman. "It offers a sleek, modern look that holds up for years—perfect for clients who want durability without sacrificing style." While it comes at a higher price point, its longevity and performance make it a worthwhile investment for many boaters.

The design of the cockpit enclosure on this Bluewater 56 prioritized both aesthetics and functionality. The customer wanted a clean design and the ability to move freely around the boat as needed, while also being protected from the elements.

With sustainability in mind, participation in programs like Recycle My Sunbrella is high on Trotman's List. At our San Diego Loft, for example, the team often recycles the leftover scraps from sail covers to make mast covers, reducing fabric waste and overall cost.

Trotman's team is currently accepting inquiries for projects to prep for the summer and fall season, while the off-season allows them to focus on more complex projects like full upholstery jobs. Whether outfitting a racer or a cruiser, Trotman's work is all about smart solutions, craftsmanship, and keeping boaters comfortable, protected, and stylish on the water.
