2024 One Design Sails Update

Our team at Quantum Sails is always hard at work to create the highest-performing One Design sails in the business. Each year, we improve upon the last, looking to meet and exceed the needs of our clients with improvements on past designs and entirely new entries to our portfolio of sails. Our 2024 sails have proven to be the fastest on the market, already securing wins around the world.

Below is an update on what is new this year in our One Design portfolio as well as a collection of thoughts from experts in each class. Quantum's annual One Design Sale has already begun, so reach out to your local loft if something catches your eye!

Melges 24

With improved performance and an updated design, the new 2024 M3 Mainsail and AG1 Jib are already race-proven. Quantum's high-performing black VX skins are applied to our Fusion M racing sail structures designed with Quantum's state-of-the-art iQ Technology®. These sails are lighter, stronger, and more durable with fiber in all the right places to give you repeatable shapes hoist after hoist. When paired with the fast, stable, and durable Quantum Melges asymmetrical spinnakers, you've got the winning combination.

Top Corinthian, professional, and club teams are turning to Quantum for the fastest and most reliable sails to elevate their programs and their recent race results show it. At the Melges 2024 World Championship in San Francisco, Quantum-equipped boats took four of the top five finishing positions, with Don Wilson, Jeremy Wilmot, Ian Liberty, Edward Hacknew and Tomas Dietrich on Convexity taking the title of World Champions.

Scott Nixon, Global Offshore One Design Director at Quantum said, "The latest Melges 24 designs from Quantum have been tested and proven. The fastest teams in San Francisco for the Worlds were all using our latest stock-class sails. This includes the M3 main with an updated fiber layout to support the leech, the AG1 jib, and the V4 and V1 spinnakers. I have been sailing in this class for many years and I cannot recall a more dominating Worlds win with blazing boat speed from the top two teams. Don Wilson and his Convexity team had the ability to change modes quickly and could go from a very fast VMG high mode to an unmatchable bow-down fast mode. This significant boat speed and mode-changing ability helped them dominate the speed-driven Berkley Circle race course. All of the top teams used the latest designed V4 class reaching spinnaker, which really performs well in 14+ TWS."

J/80

Quantum has released an entirely new set of J/80 sails for 2024. Scott Nixon provided his comments, saying "The new MX23 main, JM23 jib, and SR23 spinnaker are a new development and step forward for our class J/80 sails. These updated designs have proven themselves in class events in Europe and now the US."

The all-new MX23 mainsail design delivers power, performance, and durability and excels across a wide wind range. The MX23 features an updated panel layout to promote overall twist, additional draft, and a more vertically balanced profile. This mainsail is constructed from premium Dimension Polyant cloth for incredible shape retention. It is an all-purpose workhorse that responds to sheeting inputs and performs on every leg.

The JM23 jib has a completely new fiber layout that increases camber to deliver performance across all conditions. The new design incorporates an updated leech profile with maximum class roach at the top batten that enables the sail to be sheeted hard in light-to-moderate winds while still maintaining the ability to twist as the breeze increases. This creates more power and better flow for increased boat speed and handling. The jib is designed to be furled and built to be durable. It maintains a smooth entry for power and trims easily in lump and chop. The JM23 is constructed of lightweight Fusion M® laminate that is strong and holds its shape across the wind ranges.

The SR23 spinnaker is our new class all-purpose runner designed with additional camber to increase stability and aid when sailing deep angles, making it easier to trim than our previous class spinnakers. Designed with maximum class-legal projected area, our J/80 Asymmetrical Spinnaker is fast and easy to control downwind. Constructed of premium cloth for durability and performance, the spinnaker is available in AIRX600 or Superkote60 to suit your needs on the racecourse.

Moth

Quantum's Moth sails have been completely redesigned this year. The all-new Q-AXv2 and Q-HXv2 designs build on the successful Q-AXv1/HXv1 series. These sails, designed by Moth Class leader Mike Lennon with input from top foilers, were inspired by the race-proven performance of the outgoing Quantum Moth sails. The new designs have been updated and revised to increase sail toughness and longevity as well as performance. Both sizes have a fairer shape distribution to give smoother skin, higher durability, and easier usability. The high-performing Moth Class is sensitive to "wetted area" below the waves and above, minimizing area was essential in the design process.

Mike Lennon had the following to say about these 2024 sails: "It has been quite a year for Quantum's Moth class sails. This July, Eddie Bridle won the 2024 International Moth UK Championship with our all-new sails. Additionally, both Jean Baptiste Bernaz from France and Phillip Bhul from Germany are back Moth sailing after their Olympic duty in the ILCA class. They are working with Quantum to continue to bring our Moth sail designs to new heights.

The 2024 Moth Worlds will take place in New Zealand in January 2025. We are looking forward to Quantum Sails continuing their high performance that we have seen so far in 2024 racing."

J/70

An evolution of the race-proven CM-2, and developed with the help of iQ technology, the all-new cross-cut QM-1 mainsail is smoother, more balanced and extremely versatile. Grand-prix Quantum sail designer, Mario Trindade said, "The 2024 J/70 sails are a natural progression on an already successful design. We took our previous sails and made them even better." This sail is constructed with premium Dimension-Polyant 240AP, it comes with perpendicular lower battens on the leech and a rounder shape on the lower exit to smooth out tension wrinkles that often present in many J/70 mains. Quantum made battens one and two front-loaded to create a perfectly smooth leech on the head. The third batten will still be offered with light and heavy options to help sailors control the top cambers suited to the racing conditions.

A completely new design, the Jib QJ-1 features a luff panel layout and radial clew, allowing better support of the forestay when the halyard is loaded. The camber distribution is updated in the middle with a draft-aft design that creates a powerful profile with a more balanced entry. The longer top batten and the supplied top ring strop provide increased upper twist control, further delivering more trim options and keeping the mid leech tensioned longer. Constructed of premium Dimension-Polyant cloth, the QJ-1 delivers speed, durability, and performance.

J/105

We have released an update to our J/105 VMG Class Spinnaker this year. This sail has an updated geometry to help increase its effectiveness in class racing. This design has been thoroughly tweaked and tested on the water against all other class spinnakers and has won out test after test. This spinnaker is user-friendly and performs exceptionally across a wide range of conditions and angles. This sail is already winning events and ready to perform for your team.

The J/105 VMG Asymmetrical's innovative design ensures that it's deep in all the right places, providing maximum projection and true skin area to deliver superior performance downwind. Whether you're running or wing-on-wing, this spinnaker delivers speed, efficiency, and control, taking your sailing to the next level. The all new VMG Class Spinnaker doesn't just cover the basics—it's versatility and performance is engineered to win.

Scott Nixon spoke on the J/105 offerings, "Quantum's J/105 class sails continue to be the go-to sails in the J/105 class for straight lines, speed and user friendliness. The Quantum AP Carbon Class Jib is a cut above all others. This jib trimmed properly allows for a high mode that others can't match."
