An engineer with Masters degrees in solid chemistry, materials science and nano-technologies, sail designer Matthieu Souben said his work lets him combine two things he loves—sailing and engineering. “It requires good theoretical knowledge, pragmatism and many other skills in the same job,” said Matthieu. “I can create the sail I want, then imagine it sailing from my office.” An experienced racer, Matthieu sailed professionally from 2003–2007 for the French Olympic Sailing Team, campaigning on the Tornado. His monohull racing experience includes J/80, Figaro, Mini 6.50, and Class 40. A multihull specialist, he’s also raced Formula 18, Diam 24, GC 32, Decision 35, and several maxi offshore trimarans. At the Quantum Sails France loft in Vannes, France, Matthieu works primarily on the design and development of sails for inshore and offshore One Design classes. He also assists with sales and developing and managing customer sail programs in France and throughout Europe. Whether he’s in the loft or on the water, Quantum’s resources help him provide the best services and products for his clients. “My favorite things about working for Quantum Sails are the good guys, good relationships, and common will that provides a great opportunity for us to realize great things.”
