Jan started sailing Optimist dinghies when he was 13 years old, and got caught in the excitement of the speed and handling. The more he learned about racing, Jan realized that most of the winners of the big races were either royal, rich, or sailmakers. “I figured that becoming a sailmaker was the easiest,” said Jan, so he began his sailmaking career in 1975. In 1979, Jan started designing sails, and in 2001 he joined Quantum Sails as the owner and manager of Quantum Denmark. He loves being able to talk to and get input and inspiration from other Quantum sailmakers, designers, and salesmen. Those resources help him provide the best service to his customers. “I love talking to customers through the design and detailing phase of building new sails, and I love getting positive feedback from them,” said Jan. Today Jan designs a variety of sails, specializing in local DH rating rules, ORC, and local one design classes, including X-79, X-99, CB 66, Nordic Folkboat, and more. An experienced sailor, he’s won several major Danish regattas, including being a two-time X-Gold Cup winner and a two-time Danish Doublehand Champion. When he’s not racing or making sails, Jan can be found cruising on the water.
