Quantum Introduces J/88 Sails

Shortly after J Boats announced the new J/88, the Quantum sail design team made a commitment to developing fast sails for the new mid-size “family speedster.” Design highlights of this boat include a high-aspect, non-overlapping sail plan (no genoas), and a carbon fiber, double-spreader, mast that is deck stepped for easy rigging and tuning. 

The J/88 class rules for the sail inventory call for a main, jib, and two asymmetrical spinnakers. Quantum’s sail designers set goals for the inventory based on its success in the J/109 and 111 classes. In both classes, these sails have won Block Island Race Week and the North Americans. Some of the key ingredients and characteristics used on the 109 and 111 are being applied to the J/88 sails. 

Membrane Upwind Sails

Both the main and jib are Fusion M™ membrane sails with a fiber mix of 30% Carbon and 70% Aramid yarns. Referred to as the MR 7300 in Quantum’s product line, this choice is well suited to this application. This fiber blend results in a low-stretch, highly durable material. Extra fiber passes figured into the design also add durability while ensuring peak performance throughout the entire expected wind range. The design of the mainsail shape follows principles similar to Quantum’s J/109 and J/111 mains.

Quantum recommends two jibs for the J/88 with the idea that two sails will allow each to last longer while performing better in a given wind range. The wind range for the light/medium jib is 0 to 18 knots and for the heavy jib, 14 to 27 knots. There will be an overlap of four knots where either sail can perform (see sail selection chart below). In the J/109, it’s been found the boat is faster with the heavy jib in 15+ knots. Among the great features on the J/88 are the adjustable jib leads and inhaulers. These will allow the light-medium jib to perform well in a wide range of conditions.

Based on trials and success achieved with the J/109 and J/111 jibs, the trim  recommendation is to inhaul and power-up the sail for lighter winds, while in windier conditions it pays to ease the lead aft and flatten the bottom of the jib.

Two Downwind Sails

Two asymmetrical spinnakers will give the J/88 a good sail inventory for different wind ranges yielding greater performance. Downwind sails consist of an AP A2 Asymmetrical at 95 Sq. meters, and a Reaching A3 Asymmetrical at 80 Sq. meters.  This comparison chart illustrates their differences.
