Quantum 2011 Racing Recap

The 2011 racing season launched with Key West Race Week in January where Q™ equipped boats started the year “big” with straight wins for Vela Veloce, winning Key West, Pineapple Cup, and RORC in Class IRC 1.

Quantum also had wins at Key West in the Farr 30 class and a 2nd in the Melges 32 class. These great successes were followed up by a wins at J/24 midwinters by Peter Bream and the Pan Am Trials by John Mollicone, both with full Quantum inventories.

As the season progressed, Quantum’s class sails saw other big wins the 470 top female at the ISAF Worlds, J/22 Worlds, Farr 30 Worlds, Farr 40 European Championship, J/80 Worlds, the US Melges 32 Circuit and many more (see complete one design race report here).

Brad Van Liew sailed his Eco 60 Le Pinguoin to victory in the Velux 5 Ocean Race while also making history as the first American to race solo around the world three times. Van Liew is also the first sailor in the 29-year history of the race to have made clean sweeps in two events.

Annie Haeger of Boston College was named Quantum Collegiate Female Sailor of the Year following a fantastic year of college sailboat racing in which she placed in the top three in nearly every women’s event she sailed in during the year.

The spring also saw the start of the Audi Med Cup Circuit and Quantum Sails once again had boats in the hunt for the win. New in 2011, Quantum added a full inventory to a Soto 40 entry, Team Iberdrola. This team began the season with a win at Cascais–as did Quantum Racing–and dominated the Soto 40 class the rest of the circuit. Quantum Racing had a great season as well, with top-three finishes at Marseille and Cartegena helping to seal their second MedCup Circuit win in three years. This accomplishment was followed by victory at the TP52 World Championship.

Quantum® sails continued their winning ways in IRC and PHRF racing at Block Island Race Week, sweeping the Rolex Awards with Interlodge winning for IRC performance for the Around the Island Race. Ptarmigan was named the top IRC boat, and Rush won for best performance out of the One-Design fleets.

Thanks for choosing Quantum® sails and congratulations on a great year of racing. We look forward to working with you in the months ahead….here’s to a speedy 2012!
