Quantum® Sails Take Eight of Top Ten Finishes By Terry Flynn, Quantum Seabrook
The 2011 Southwest Circuit, which will include seven regattas in Texas this year, kicked off this past weekend at Lake Canyon. The Circuit winner will be the one taking the best four out of seven regattas.
It was a fantastic regatta for Quantum, with eight of the top ten finishes going to teams sailing with Q™ sails. I arrived at LCYC early Friday afternoon with enough time to put my boat together and then the fun started: delivering sails to customers and going out for a test sail and rig checks. The weather was just perfect; warm with 10 to 12 kts of wind.
The great weather didn’t stay for Saturday. The best wind of the day was sailing out to the racecourse. After a postponement, the wind filled to 4 to 7 kts and we managed to get in two races before the wind died for the day. Eric Faust had a good day and was leading with a 1, 3. We were in second with a 2, 4. Max Scott was in third with a 5,2 with three other boats only a few points back.
Sunday the wind switched around to the northeast and built to around 12 for the first race. The top four boats traded place for the whole race. We managed to be winning at the right time, the finish. Eric finished second and Max ended up third so Eric was now only one point up on us but Max was still only a few points back. The last race we got a terrible start up by the committee boat and were forced to tack to port right after the gun. We went about 50 yards and tack back.
Here is where it is better to be lucky than good. We hooked into a great puff and shot out to a lead and we managed to hold on to it for the rest of the race. This gave us the win with Eric finishing second and Max ended up third overall.
Boats powered by Quantum Sails finished 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th. I want to thank the members of LCYC for their hospitality and hard work putting this regatta on including pancake breakfasts and a great dinner on Saturday. I look forward to sailing there every year. –TF
