J/70 Sail Development by Quantum Sail Design Group  

Quantum Sail Design Group is an acknowledged leader in advanced sail making technology and sail development. These tools, combined with top sail designers, have led to Quantum’s dominance in many J boat classes. For these reasons, Quantum was chosen by J Boats to be one of the lead sail developers for the new J/70.

Quantum sail designer Kerry Klingler and Scott Nixon conducted on-the-water sail testing and tweaked Quantum's class sails to get the shapes perfect for the class introduction. 

The analysis process started with modeling of the boat and its characteristics in Quantum's iQ Technology® design software, which led to refinements in the sail plan and sail layout. At the same time, an assessment was done on material utilization and construction. The resulting J/70 designs take advantage of long- lasting Quantum sail construction with the addition of large redial patches in the head and clew of the sail. This marriage of material selection with radial patching has been used for other J boats resulting in sails that have powered world champions in the J/22, J/24, and J/80 classes.  

For the class asymmetrical, precise modeling techniques were used to fine-tune the size and geometry of the sail to maximize performance. The sail was also evaluated on its versatility; with one class sail, the ability to adjust to different wind speeds and angles is essential.
